Derek Wyatt MP said: “I would like to congratulate the pupils and teachers for their hard work in the 2008 National Curriculum Tests. We now know that more pupils are leaving primary school equipped to succeed in their next school than were doing so 12 years ago.
“These are good results but we know there is more to do. We are committed to ensuring that pupils who fall behind are spotted quickly and that support is put in place to help them. That is why we have funded Every Child a Reader and we are piloting Every Child Counts. This targeted early intervention for children who are struggling is vital to ensuring they have the best chance of mastering the basics. We are also funding one to one tuition to support pupil progress in English and mathematics. This is targeted at children aged 7-11 identified as being at risk of falling behind in either subject.”
