Prime Minister rules out Estuary Airport

29 March 2010

From kentnews.co.uk:

KENT NEWS: The Prime Minister has assured Kent voters his party has no plans to build a Boris Island-style airport in the Thames Estuary.

Tory London Mayor Boris Johnson has promoted the idea of such a development – which would be built on floating islands off the coast of the Isle of Sheppey – as an alternative to the Government’s controversial third runway at Heathrow.

Environmentalists and local politicians have slammed the idea since it was first suggested in 2008, and Gordon Brown confirmed to KOS Media this week that it was not something Labour supports.

He said: “We as a government have made a commitment to the future of Heathrow and I think people know where we stand on this issue.

“I know the Tories are against what we want to achieve at Heathrow but I think our proposals are better than theirs.”
